ADOPTION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES
The Malton Health and Safety Committee minutes of
August 15, 2006 were approved as printed/circulated.
2.
Summary of RECOMMENDATIONS
No
recommendations were put forward from previous meeting.
3. WSIB (Workplace Safety
Insurance Board) SUMMARY
In August two
WSIB reports were filed which did not result in lost time.
4. WHMIS UPDATE
On September
12th WHMIS training was given to the seven newly hired operators.
5.
TRAINING
Management
Co-Chair informed the Committee that Core Certification training is being
arranged for either October or November and will be advised once arrangements
have been finalized.
6. MSDS REVIEW
No items or
products were brought forward.

Bus Stop
Talks
The Health &
Safety Specialist introduced “The “Bus Stop Talks” program to the Committee for
their review. This program was developed to bring awareness to safety in the
workplace as well as within the home environment. Throughout the coming year
topics will be posted on the Health & Safety bulletin board.
Operators
Calling Out Bus Stops
The Health &
Safety Committee have endorsed operators calling out bus stops effective October
23rd. This requirement is in accordance with standards which are
being developed by the Ministry of Community and Social Services for the
Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The proposed
standards read as follows:
“The operator
shall announce stops;
a) at
transfer points with other fixed routes, other major intersections and
destination points; and
b) at any
stop on the request of any customer”.

The following item was

Yield to Bus Law
Worker rep
raised concern over the public’s lack of awareness to Yield to Bus Law as
drivers are not allowing buses to re-enter the lane of traffic from lay-bys.

Outside Line Markings

Supervisor, Stores &
Equipment has arranged for the painting of all outside line markings
around the facility including the walkways and picnic areas. Work
to be completed end of May, weather permitting.
Nozzle on machine broken is
on order.
Inside line markings have
been completed, outside line markings still to be completed.
Waiting on parts for
completion of outside line markings. Work to be completed by Sept.
22nd, staff parking lines will be done once renovations
are completed. |

weather seal.

Corporate Services have been
issued an urgent 402 request, so funds will be allocated in their
2007 budget, to complete work required. However, it is hoped that
this work can be included in the upcoming Malton renovation project. |

Trees on Cardiff Blvd.

Request made to have trees trimmed on Cardiff North of Lorimar Drive
due to sightline difficulty. This has been forwarded to Recreation
and Parks – Forestry.
Trees cut on wrong side of street. Management Co-Chair will follow
up with Recreation and Parks -Forestry.
Forestry has issued another work order for trees to be trimmed on
correct side of street.
Management Co-Chair to follow up with Forestry on status of request
as work was to be completed by Sept. 22nd. |

New Paper Towels

Complaints received that the
new paper towels are causing irritation and rash. MSDS sheet
indicates that there are no hazardous components. Further
complaints will be investigated on an individual basis.
Committee advised of
operators still experiencing an allergic skin reaction from towels
recently placed within the workplace. Worker rep wondered if
installing hand dryers would assist in resolving of problem.
Management Co-Chair investigating matter further.
Management Co-Chair findings
discussed and concluded that as complaints are received they will be
investigated on an individual basis. |

N/B Route 57 (Stop #3082)

Due to the insufficient
distance between the stop and left turn, operators feel it is unsafe
to service this stop.
Management Co-Chair has
spoken to Service Delivery and is waiting for their response.
Worker rep stated that there are three stops (with shelters) within
200’ of each other and wondered if one could be removed.
Service Delivery to contact
Traffic to ascertain whether the lanes can be modified to better
accommodate buses making a left hand turn. |

WWM Entrance

The side walk concrete
blocks have heaved from the heat, leaving quite a gap between the
concrete and the pavement; resulting in an onboard incident being
filed.
Management Co-Chair has
spoken to Service Delivery and is waiting for their response.
Arrangements have been made
for Sept. 20th to close off the west entrance to WWM
terminal in order for grinding and repaving to be completed. |
